Over recent years, the European Union has been increasingly exploring new alternative routes and sources for natural gas due to energy security concerns, mostly associated with the Russian - Ukrainian circumstances and the significant role which natural gas is expected to have in the future. Currently it is considered as "the transition fuel" to the future green-energy reality.
Economic instruments, particularly carbon tax and emissions trading scheme (ETS), have recently attracted the most attention to combat climate change because of their cost efficency to reduce emissions. Introducing these in Asia, where most of the countries do not currently have emission reduction.
The chapter "A Renewable Energy Future?" was written by Prof. Michael Jefferson in the "Handbook On Energy And Climate Change" and edited by Roger Fouquet, Principal Research Fellow, Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment, London School of Economics, UK.
