On the night of the US election, Olivier Delbard was invited to participate in a debate on TV5MONDE. Sylvie Brunel and Yves-Marie Péréon were also part of the round table, which focused on energy choices and environmental issues in the USA, present and future. The main topic was that of shale gas exploitation in the USA: What is the right balance between the obvious economic benefits of shale gas (energetic independence, lower cost of production) and the environmental risks related to the activity (use of water, contamination of underground water, environmental degradation)? What about regulation and supervision? Is the European view on this issue too negative - and even more so in France?
All these issues led us to question American lifestyle choices and cultural values in regards to the use of natural resources and environmental footprints. What of energy efficiency?
