Bringing Together Renewable Energy Cooperatives and Local Communities as Catalysts for Energy Transition – Here’s What You Need to Know

Lessons learned from the Westmill Wind Farm and Solar Park

Earlier this year, students from the MSc in Energy Management specialisation visited Westmill Wind Farm and Solar Park – the first 100% community-owned onshore wind farm and solar park in the south of England. The field trip provided participants with key insights into wind and solar technology, the electricity-generation process, operational challenges and benefits, and whether policies support the growth of wind and solar.

The site was the vision of Adam Twine (landowner and farmer), who was inspired by a trip to Denmark where 20% of the country’s renewable energy is owned by communities. It is believed to be the UK’s first and the world’s largest cooperatively run, community-owned solar farm.

How this Economist Successfully Incorporates Sustainability and Innovation at a Top Energy Research Firm

Venezuela is the country with the largest proved oil reserves according to the 2022 BP Statistical Review of World Energy, and is also one of the top ten countries with the largest reserves of natural gas. The economy of the South American nation is reliant on its fossil fuel industry, hence its being highly vulnerable to the so-called Dutch disease, in which a government develops a risky dependence on natural resource exports to the detriment of other sectors in the economy. After years of economic decline, the nation’s economy grew 17.73% year-over-year in the first three quarters of 2022 according to Venezuela’s Central Bank.

Rodrigo Quintero, MEM Alumnus from the 2023 class and now Energy Economist at BloombergNEF, shares with us how ESCP Business School’s MSc in Energy Management (MEM) equipped him with the right tools to thrive in an exciting career in the United Kingdom at one of the most respected energy research companies.

6th HAEE Energy Transition Symposium: "Looking ahead with optimism, beyond the Covid era"

The Hellenic Association for Energy Economics will host the 6th annual Energy Transition Symposium, at Theoxenia Palace Hotel in Kifisia, Athens, Greece, for four consecutive days, from Tuesday, 28 September to Friday, 1 October 2021, offering the unique opportunity for a thorough exchange of experience and knowledge in the important global energy sector.  ESCP Business School and its Energy Management Centre (EMC) will take part as Knowledge Partners at the event.

Following the unusual circumstances of 2020, HAEE’s flagship gathering on energy transition will focus on the turbulences caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and its prints on the global energy system. Despite the sharp decrease in global emissions last year, due to the recession of economic activities, enormous efforts are still required to reach the ambitious target of a net zero carbon economy. Governments need to take decisive actions and implement structural measures to accelerate the clean energy transition and pave the way towards a sustainable recovery. On top of that, renewable energy solutions can play a key role, providing a fast response to the pandemic and building more resilient energy systems. These issues, among many others, will be addressed in detail during the Symposium’s sessions.

Calling all creative innovators in Africa, the environment needs you

A recent report has shown that in addition to conflict, climate change is contributing to food insecurity across some parts of the continent: ''224 million people are now reportedly under-nourished on the continent, an increase of over 20 million in recent years. The reasons for this are complicated but related to the increasing pressures of extreme weather events. Rising temperatures and a greater prevalence of droughts across the continent has led to repeated crop failures.'' Widely read and widely shared, this topic is not trending in Africa.

Africa's environment is under serious threat, and along with it the very livelihoods of it's people. The Guardian report on the cocoa industry in Ivory Coast highlighted how the country's rainforest cover is being destroyed at a staggering rate- going from covering 25% of the country to just a mere 4% in just two decades.

Does Odysseus of the US LNG return to “Ithaca”?

By Energy Press.

In Greece, during the last years, there has been considerable debate about the great potential in the hydrocarbon sector and its key geostrategic position, which may be appropriate even for the creation of an international hub for the passage of crucial channels. Nevertheless, the above mentioned aspects have not been proven yet.

What is safe to say is that, so far, Greece and the wider Balkan region do form a region of competition against the US, Russia and China. As it is well known, Russia, besides the frequent gas supply in Greece, has been unsuccessfully working with Greece on various energy projects so far, while China has proceeded rapidly to implement important programmes in the country, which opened the way to Europe.

At the end of 2017, a number of leading international banks publicly announced their intentions to divest from coal. Some of these big names included ING, The World Bank and Axa. And earlier this week Lloyd's Bank of London joined them announcing they would begin ''excluding coal from its investment strategy from 1 April.''

ESCP Experts to attend the Energy Summit 2017 in London

We are delighted to announce that ESCP Business School and its Energy Management Centre (EMC) will be taking part as  Supporting Partners at this year’s Energy Summit event taking place on 28th November at The HAC, London. The School and Centre will be represented by its Faculty and staff members.

After a challenging year, the energy industry is emerging in better shape. Low oil prices brought attention to efficiency gains and the need to optimise return on invested capital, and investment forecasts in some sectors, such as US-focused exploration and production, are now positive for 2017. Countries historically off-limits to investors, like Iran and Mexico, are tentatively opening their doors to foreign investment, and a recovering oil price should improve the viability of ambitious frontier projects. Moreover, rapid developments in fourth industrial revolution technologies and the internet of things, including automation and robotics, are becoming more deeply embedded in the energy sector. Meanwhile, the renewables sector continues to thrive, with innovation in electric cars, solar photovoltaics and the energy internet driving progress.

The result of the UK Referendum comes as a disappointment to many in the UK Higher Education sector, including ESCP Europe.

ESCP Europe fully respects the decision of the UK electorate, but there are many reasons to believe that the outcome will create challenges for education providers. It will take many months for the full consequences of this decision to be understood as a UK exit from the EU will not happen for some time. If the UK Parliament approves the result of the public referendum, there will be a gradual exit process with significant conversation around the alternatives to full EU membership.

The Final Day - and Almost our Final Battery: ESCP Electric Vehicle Road Trip – Day 8

We all woke knowing that it was – sadly - the final day of our journey. The urge was strong to stay in bed to recover from the long days and nights of driving, but a day of sightseeing awaited!

The team agreed to meet at the Arc De Triomphe at 11am where we would grab breakfast and some much needed coffee. Finding a suitable – and legal - place to park three magnificent Tesla Model S cars near the Arc De Triomphe proved more difficult that we had anticipated! After 20 minutes of trying with no success we agreed to drive to Montmartre where we could find a French Bistro and enjoy the afternoon.

Paris - The Grand Finale: ESCP Electric Vehicle Road Trip – Day 7

Today was the grand finale of the trip, our final destination before we headed back to London. To mark this special occasion we had two exciting events planned: a trip to the British Ambassador’s residence in Paris, Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré, where we had been invited for tea by British Ambassador Julian King; and the final Energy Conference of the EVRT held at ESCP’s largest and oldest campus on Avenue de la République. It was the day we had all been looking forward to the most! The conferences have been a great opportunity for us to develop a better understanding of the current issues in energy markets, and were the events we had been looking forward to the most!

The Ambassador’s Residence

The high-profile nature of this meeting meant that Prof. Dr Kostas Andriosopoulos, Academic Director for the MSc in Energy Management (MEM) programme and Shireen Fraser, Head of PR for the London Campus joined us to show their continued support for the EVRT. We parked the three cars in front of the staircase that led up to the building’s main entrance, the door of which had features resembling that of a palace. The residence has a connection with Napoleon and was the first British Embassy bought and owned by the British.

From Turin to Paris: ESCP Electric Vehicle Road Trip – Day 6

At 9:30am we drove the cars and a caravan to the ESCP’s Turin Campus. Charging was a challenge; we had to ensure that the cars were fully-charged before we entered the city as there are no Tesla super charging stations. The nearest super charger was in Cavaglia, which is 60 km away.

As we drove through Turin, we realised that the cars were drawing a lot of interest and admiring looks. This was no surprise given that Turin is the automotive manufacturing capital of Italy, and the Italian passion for sports cars is well known. After all, Italy gave the world the Ferrari and Lamborghini!

From Berlin to Turin: ESCP Electric Vehicle Road Trip – Day 5

TESLAS DRIVING IN OPPOSITE DIRECTIONS

The day started early as we had a 1200km drive ahead. In a traditional engine convention car the journey would take us around 13 hours; however, in a Tesla electric car the expected duration of the journey was 17 hours. Despite the early start, the team was in good spirits and excited about driving through the Swiss Alps.

Berlin & The Energiewende: ESCP Electric Vehicle Road Trip – Day 4

After sleeping and meeting up for breakfast, we quickly realised there was a serious problem: Aurora was low on energy, plus the cold night had robbed the car of an additional 10km - this left us with just 18km. We were supposed to be at ESCP's Berlin Campus at 12.30pm, and there are no Tesla Super Chargers in the city centre. After searching for nearby EV charging stations on our phones, we drove to two Vattenfall charging stations. We were surprised to find they only work with charging cards, which seemed ludicrous and made the charging stations inaccessible. As a result we were not be able to drive all three cars to the Berlin Campus.

Maher found an app called Plugsurfing that mapped all EV charging stations in Berlin. This enabled Ben to get to a pay-as-you-go EV charging station close to our hotel. We had to leave Aurora to charge and, after a little rearrangement, we were back on schedule to arrive at the campus for 12:30pm!

As we arrived at the Berlin campus we were welcomed with a barrage of friendly faces, including a photographer. The focus was clearly on the gorgeous Tesla Model S vehicles, but we would also like to think that they were excited to meet the EVRT team, too.

A Tour of the Tesla Factories: ESCP Electric Vehicle Road Trip – Day 3

TILBURG

As we stepped outside of our hotel in Tilburg, Netherlands, the chilly air and sunlight welcomed us to a fresh start to the day. Just a 20-minute drive brought us to our first destination: the Tesla plant.

TWO TESLA FACTORIES

The demand for cars outstripped the capacity of the first Tesla plant, so the company built a second factory to resolve the problem. The former plant now serves as a Tesla Service Centre. The staff provided us with the directions for the second factory and we were on our way!

Electric Vehicles in the UK: Turning Niche into Mainstream - Day 1

The London campus of ESCP Business School hosted the launch of the ESCP Electrical Vehicle Road Trip (EVRT) on 12th March 2016. The event included the first energy conference in a four-part series taking place in London, Berlin, Turin, and Paris. The topic of a lively panel discussion was ‘Electric Vehicles in the UK: Turning Niche into Mainstream’.

To give attendees a hands-on experience of what travel in an electric vehicle is like, the EVRT team arranged for a Tesla Model S shuttle-service to operate between West Hampstead and Finchley Road tube stations and the ESCP campus. For most, this was their first taste of an electric car, and reactions were overwhelmingly positive.
