Objectives

The key objective of the Decision Making in Renewables course is to enhance participants' skills in developing a structured decision-making process for the evaluation of investments in the renewable energy sector. It will give a clear approach to understanding the potential and create scenarios for the profitability of possible investments in green energy sector.

Content

• Overview of the key drivers for renewables profitability, starting from the sub-drivers influencing the margin pressure on the reference market

• Status of the main technologies from the business point of view (e.g. from wind to waste to energy) and the development stage in each market

• Deepening of the profitability drivers for each technology, starting from the technology basics to the soft drivers (e.g. public acceptance)

• Evaluation approaches specific for each technology, analysing the main profitability driver (e.g. the grid parity) and crossing it with the margin pressure

• Development of the Decision Making Matrix, combining and correlating the profitability drivers in different margin scenarios for specific markets

The course includes role play situations to facilitate the learning of the approach and the specific techniques. All required course materials will be distributed as the course progresses.

Learning outcomes

This workshop will enhance participants' capability to understand the potential of and evaluate a specific investment in the Renewables sector, both in mature and emerging markets. It overcomes the traditional pitfalls caused by underestimating the profitability drivers.

Pedagogical approach

The course is organised as a case-based workshop, whereby participants will structure their learning activities in response to specific real-world challenges. Through this, the course gives participants the opportunity to develop both subject-specific and transferable skills. It presents a challenge-based learning approach to this new selling approach in an intuitive way with the minimum of theoretical concepts.
