James B. Seaton III is an associate at the Energy Management Centre at ESCP Business School, and Executive in Residence at the Houston Technology Center in Houston, Texas, where he advises and assists start-up energy companies. 

James is a retired US Marine Corps Colonel with broad operational risk management, crisis management, senior advisory and policy experience. He was a personal advisor to General David Petraeus in the US, the Middle East, Central Asia, and Afghanistan. He commanded Camp Pendleton, the Marine Corps' major California base, when it was named the top Marine Corps installation and received numerous safety and energy management awards. He served at the White House on the National Security Council staff, received the military instructor of the year award while teaching political science at the US Naval Academy, and led Marines in operations around the world, including in Southeast Asia, Iraq, Lebanon, and Grenada. 

James holds a Master of Arts in Political Science from Duke University, a Mastère Spécialisé in Energy Management from ESCP Business School, a Master of Arts in Strategic Studies from the US Army War College and a Bachelor of Arts in International Affairs from Jacksonville University. He was awarded a Council on Foreign Relations International Affairs Fellowship and has published a book chapter and articles in the Washington Post and in academic and military journals. James is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.
